HOME MAINTENANCE

Low-VOC Paints
Home maintenance materials contain VOCs. Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs, emit gasses from chemicals in construction materials used to build and finish homes, including paints. Off gassing adversely affects health, and VOC concentrations indoors may be up to 10 times those outdoors. Buy no-VOC paints when possible, although some contain other potentially hazardous chemicals; another option is to buy naturally low-VOC water-based paints or natural paints. Some states have VOC laws, setting content limits for VOCs in paints and other coatings. To see if your state posts VOC laws, click here. Carpet Care & Alternatives
Chemicals used to manufacture and install carpets emit VOCs. To lower emissions, buy Low-VOC carpets or install alternative flooring. Because of their many loose fibers, carpets trap allergens and pollutants. When carpets are vacuumed, cleaned, or walked on, trapped particles become airborne. To reduce indoor air pollution, use vacuums with HEPA filters and natural carpet shampoos, or hire green carpet cleaning services. The American Lung Association advises installing hard flooring with rugs that can be removed and cleaned outside. Green flooring options, e.g. natural linoleum, can be cleaned naturally. Lawn Care
Weedkillers and outdoor pesticides have been linked to serious health disorders, including birth defects. Livestrong breaks down the chemical and related health effects of weedkillers. To read, click here. Outdoor pesticides and weedkillers present a greater danger to small children and pets, since they spend more time closer to the ground. With a smaller body mass, they are also more susceptible to the effects of the toxins. Buy natural weed killers online or in stores. Find recipes for natural weed killers online. My favorite list of homemade weed killers for lawns is in Good Housekeeping, March 2019 edition. To read, click here.
